Our Doctrine

Traditional Martial Arts Training. Modern Self Defense Applications.

We don't teach multiple single disciplines that leave gaps in concepts and real-world self defense. We teach one unified system drawn from many traditions — Forge is not a sport dojo, we are a real-world self defense academy built for protection, not just trophies.

Awareness

Situational awareness is your first line of defense. We train the mind to read environments, recognize threats, and make sound decisions before contact is ever made.

Discipline

Traditional structure — belts, forms, respect — that builds character one rep at a time.

Capability

Traditional and modern drills for developing real world strength, speed, and skill.

Forge isn't built on a single style — it's built on the willingness to keep learning. We draw concepts and strategies from multiple martial arts disciplines, modern combatives, and real-world experience in armed security, law enforcement, and military training — adapting and refining our curriculum as we grow.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Where is Forge Self Defense Academy located?
Forge trains daytime out of Vu's Martial Arts in McKinney, TX (1550 Custer Rd Ste 300), serving families across Collin County — Allen, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Anna, Melissa, Princeton, Fairview, Lucas, and Wylie. Most local families reach the academy in 10–35 minutes.
Do you offer kids martial arts and self defense classes near me?
Yes. We train students starting at age 4 with Spark, Ignite, Warrior, and Legendary programs — drawing students from Allen, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Anna, Melissa, Princeton, Fairview, Lucas, and Wylie.
What changes when Forge moves into its own facility?
We plan to move into our own dedicated Forge facility in the McKinney/Allen area as soon as the founding base supports it. That unlocks a full weekly schedule and traditional after school classes (most likely starting at 4pm), dedicated adults-only classes, a women's self defense track, expanded sparring and grappling sessions, seminars, belt testings as full events, and a real strength & conditioning corner. The standard doesn't change — the room just gets bigger.
Why train at Vu's right now instead of waiting?
Two reasons. First, founding members lock in launch pricing for the life of their membership — that rate doesn't follow us to the new facility for new students. Second, the smaller founding class means more direct instruction, faster feedback, and a tighter community before we scale. The families who start in this room set the culture of the academy.
What's the difference between Spark, Ignite, Warrior, and Legendary?
They're four rooms on one belt ladder, calibrated by age. Spark (4–5) builds pre-phase foundations — listening, motor skills, safe falling. Ignite (5–7) is about half Spark-style foundations, a quarter real curriculum in kid-sized form, and a quarter early situational awareness: learning to notice threats and 'oddities' before it's too late. Warrior (7–12) is the full color belt ladder with real phase tests. Legendary (12–Adult) shares the same ladder with higher physical standards and advanced conceptual framing.
Do you have classes for adults?
Yes — right now teens and adults train together in our Legendary class, and we'll open an adults-only class as we grow. This blended format is actually the traditional way martial arts schools ran for decades, and there's real value in it: teens get adult mentors to look up to and stay focused around, and adults get the challenge of training alongside hungry, fast-improving younger students. Some of the strongest mentor relationships in martial arts come out of exactly that room.
How long does it take to earn a Forge black belt?
Students become eligible for their black belt selection in year 4, with no Full Black Belt awarded under age 16 — both rules are non-negotiable. The belt reflects skill, not time served. A Forge black belt is known to be a beast in competition and in real-world self defense, and we protect that meaning at every test.
Do I keep my belt if I switch programs?
Yes. There is one belt ladder at Forge. Your rank travels with you between Spark, Ignite, Warrior, Legendary, and Adult — you're never reset because you aged into a new room.
Is this a Christian martial arts school?
Forge is faith-anchored; meaning the principles we teach (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, etc.), are all taught from a foundation of scripture. We don't preach, but we don't shy away from voicing what we believe. And our optional Forged Faith track teaches biblical foundations and apologetics alongside training. You don't have to participate — but every family is welcome.
Do you teach real self defense?
Absolutely. Here at the Forge we teach concepts over techniques; meaning students aren't taught to memorize techniques for a test, they are taught concepts of striking, joint manipulation, defensive tactics, angles, proper form, spatial awareness, and a myriad of other things that re-enforce techniques so that on testing day (and in real life) they can perform their own "technique" for defense.
What's the difference between Forge and a traditional MMA gym?
MMA gyms train you to fight under cage rules. Forge trains you for the real world — striking, grappling, weapons awareness, and decision-making under pressure, all anchored in traditional discipline and character. We pull the best from MMA, traditional martial arts, and real-world protection experience.
What age can my child start?
We accept students starting at age 4.
Do homeschoolers attend?
Absolutely. Many of our founding families homeschool. Daytime classes will be added as the founding base grows — let us know your schedule needs.
What if I've never trained before?
Most of our students haven't. Every program starts at the foundation. Show up willing to work — we'll handle the rest.
